I chose to study Japanese because I have always wanted to travel to Japan.
In order to understand and enjoy life in a certain country, I believe that one must know how to communicate in the country's language. Language is not only a tool for communication but also an embodiment of a country's culture.
After learning Japanese, I would like to visit Japan and be able to communicate with people there and be immersed in Japanese culture. Only then, I feel as if I will be able to have a full experience of what kind of country Japan is.
So far, I have taken 4 weeks of Japanese class. Although getting used to a new "alphabet", such as hiragana, is somewhat difficult, I am excited that I am able to introduce myself and say simple sentences. I am even able to call my dad, who is fluent in Japanese, and tell him about my day in Japanese.
At the end of this semester, I hope to be more comfortable with speaking, reading, and writing Japanese.
